Jason and Celena were specifically interested in enrolling Bella in water therapy to help manage her Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) – a condition that affects the spinal discs in dogs, causing pain, inflammation, and muscle stiffness. Their regular vet recommended 1stPet’s Hydrotherapy Program to help improve Bella’s quality of life.
Hydrotherapy can help elderly and injured pets improve their mobility, lose weight, and reduce pain from chronic conditions. The water takes pressure off of the joints, and eases muscle stiffness, which is very important for a speedy recovery.
In addition, adjusting the water temperature causes changes in circulation, inflammation, and tissue metabolism. The resistance to movement in water also increases the effectiveness of some exercises, making it a great option for pets that need low-impact exercise.
“Bella has some muscle degeneration on her legs, so we chose water therapy because it would be easier on her joints,” said Celena. “It’s really hot in Arizona, so there are a good number of months where we can’t walk her outside. Weekly hydrotherapy at 1stPet really helps her stay active.”
Jason added that he and Celena can tell what a difference hydrotherapy makes for Bella’s pain and mobility – she runs around like a puppy for several days after each appointment!
Bella’s parents also love how wonderful the 1stPet staff is with Bella from the moment she walks in the door. She tends to be stressed out before her appointments, but once Bella sees Lisa, her physical therapist, she’s excited to get in the water.
“We really appreciate how accommodating 1stPet is – we rarely have any wait time, and then escort us back to the therapy room quickly, which reduces everyone’s stress levels,” said Jason.
Lisa and her team watch Bella closely during her sessions, and occasionally use marshmallows to motivate her, which Bella loves.
“The 1stPet staff is always calm and confident with Bella, no matter how high-strung she is, which immediately calms her down,” Celena said. “We love that we can be in her sessions with her – she needs her whole management team with her!”
Jason and Celena have had such a wonderful experience with 1stPet’s specialty treatment options, that they’ve begun recommending our clinic to anyone they know with an elderly pet.
“I recommend 1stPet all the time!” said Celena. “My massage therapist has an elderly dog and I always share what a great experience we’ve had with water therapy. We believe that’s what’s kept Bella healthy and strong this long!”
In addition to hydrotherapy, 1stPet clients have access to a range of specialty treatment options for their beloved pets, including acupuncture, laser therapy, thermotherapy, massage, electrical nerve stimulation, and more. 1stPet’s staff is happy to work with each pet parent to find a treatment option that suits their pets unique needs.
