Keeping Your Pets Safe This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for gathering with loved ones, but with rich food and festive décor around, it’s important to protect our pets from holiday hazards. Not all foods on the Thanksgiving table are safe for pets, and knowing what to watch out for – and when to contact a vet – can help make the day worry-free.

Foods to Enjoy (and Avoid)

Some holiday favorites can be safe treats for pets in small amounts. Plain, unseasoned, boneless turkey and a few bites of unseasoned veggies like green beans or pumpkin puree are generally okay. However, skip the fatty turkey skin and bones – they can cause serious digestive issues.

Many other holiday staples, like stuffing, mashed potatoes, and desserts, often contain ingredients toxic to pets, such as:

  • Onions and garlic
  • Chocolate
  • Raisins and grapes

If your pet does get into something risky, act fast. Stay calm, take note of what and how much they ate, and call 1st Pet Veterinary Centers right away. Our emergency team is available 24/7 to guide you through what to do next.

Décor and Hosting Tips

Decorations can pose risks, too. Flameless candles are a safer option to avoid burns or fires, and pet-proof your home from toxic plants like lilies and chrysanthemums will help prevent any accidental poisonings.

If you’re hosting guests, kindly remind them not to share food with your pet – no matter how much they beg! This simple reminder can help prevent accidental indulgences that could lead to a trip to the vet.
